Microsoft Withdraws Windows 11 KB5039302 Update that Contained Restarting Bug

Microsoft recently released an optional update called KB5039302 for Windows 11. But shortly after the release of this update, it ran into problems. In which users started reporting a serious problem. When their computers are stuck in an endless restarting loop after installing the update. In response, Microsoft has now withdrawn the update to prevent further issues.

After installing KB5039302, some users found that their PCs were not able to start completely. Instead of accessing the desktop, their affected computers were constantly restarting.

Due to this users were locked out of their own system. This problem has mainly affected people who use virtual machine tools and nested virtualization features more, which is common in business and development environments.

Which Version is Affected By the KB5039302 Update?

This bug is affecting the 23H2 and 22H2 versions of Windows 11 the most, especially the Pro and Enterprise editions. But Windows 11 Home users are not completely spared. They are less likely to face this issue as they usually use fewer virtualization tools.

Microsoft’s Response to the KB5039302 Update

Microsoft has taken immediate action after becoming aware of this problem:

  • They halted the distribution of the update via Windows Update.
  • They are investigating the root cause of the problem.
  • They have promised to work on a solution, which will likely be included in July’s Patch Tuesday update.

What to do If You are Affected by the KB5039302 Update Bug?

If you have already installed KB5039302 and are experiencing a restarting loop, you will need to access the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). From there, use the troubleshooting tool to remove the update. In severe cases, you may need to perform a clean Windows installation.

If you haven’t installed the KB5039302 update yet, don’t try to download or install it if you see it in Windows Update. Wait for Microsoft to release a fixed version of the update. You should be cautious with optional updates. Especially users who use virtualization tools.
